National Biennial Print Exhibition Opens at Springfield Art Museum Nov. 21

Prints U.S.A. 2009, a national, biennial competitive exhibition, opens at the Springfield Art Museum Nov. 21. The exhibition, which is in its sixth year, was created to recognize and encourage printmaking in the United States and its possessions.

The competition attracted 81 print artists from thirty-three states. The judges, Jerry A. Berger, Director of the Springfield Art Museum, Chalen Phillips, Curator of Collections and Sarah E. Buhr, Curator of Exhibitions selected eighty-four works out of 228 entries. Twenty-nine states are represented in the exhibition. There are sixty artists featured in the exhibition.

“The diverse and unique images created by the artists using a multitude of techniques were very exciting.  The wonders of artistic innovation and talent made viewing the works a pleasure,” said the judges.

Approximately $10,000 in cash, patron, and Springfield Art Museum purchase awards were available. The Museum purchases are selected by the Curator of Collections and Museum Director. The cash awards are selected at the judges’ discretion. The  judges selected nineteen works to receive cash awards - two $500 awards, five $350 awards and twelve $250 awards.

Four artists from Missouri and one artist from Springfield, Brian Stuparyk, have works that are included in the exhibition.
